Directions


From the South and Lake District:

By road

Via M6:  take junction 40 east (Penrith), onto the A66 east for 1/2 mile to Penrith roundabout, follow A686 to Alston for 15 miles over Hartside Pass (hope you get a nice view on the way up), turn right to Leadgate 3 miles before Alston, after 1 mile (Leadgate) turn right to Garrigill (3 miles). Rose House Studio is at the village green on the right.

Via A1: exit at Scotch Corner junction and follow signs to A66 Barnard Castle. After approx. 9 miles turn right off dual carriageway just past Greta Bridge (famously painted by John Sell cotman) to Barnard Castle past Egglestone Abbey and the Bowes Museum. Drive through centre of Barnard Castle and take B6278/B6262 to Middleton in Teesdale (approx. 8 miles). Continue through Middleton onto B6277 to Alston (19 miles) past High Force (5miles) and over Bell Beaver Rigg (look out for Cross Fell on left horizon). 3 miles before Alston turn left at cross road to Garrigill.  At bottom of steep hill (1/4 mile) turn left again, over bridge and right at village green past pub. Rose House Studio is directly ahead at the far corner of the green.

By rail:

Penrith station on the west coast main line is the nearest rail link. Contact us if you are travelling this way and we may be able to pick you up.


From Scotland:

By road

Via A74(M): exit at jounction 22 to Longtown. Take A6071 to Brampton (11miles). Take A689 to Alston out of Brampton and over the A69. At Alston (18 miles) turn left onto A686 over river South Tyne. At Alston Town Hall turn right up steep cobbled road onto A689 and continue out of Alston on B6277 Middleton in Teesdale road. After 2 miles turn right to Garrigill (1 mile) past Thortergill Forge over river Tyne bridge and right at village green past pub. Rose House Studio is directly ahead at the far corner of the green.


From the East

By road

From Durham take the B689 Weardale route to Alston. At top of Alston take sharp left onto B6277 Middleton in Teesdale road. After 2 miles turn right to Garrigill (1 mile) past Thortergill Forge over river Tyne bridge and right at village green past pub. Rose House Studio is directly ahead at the far corner of the green.

From Newcastle and Northumberland take A69 past Hexham  onto A686 Alston road (21 miles) before Haydon Bridge (new byepass under construction). Drive 17 miles to Alston and turn left onto A689 up cobbled main street. At top of hill continue right on the B6277 Middleton in Teesdale road. After 2 miles turn right to Garrigill (1 mile) past Thortergill Forge over river Tyne bridge and right at village green past pub. Rose House Studio is directly ahead at the far corner of the green.


By public transport

There is a bus service from Newcastle to Alston.  The service is limited but we are happy to provide details, pick you up from Alston and take you to your accommodation.
